Why Readers Actually Pay for Content
It isn't guilt and it isn't charity. The data on what converts a casual reader into a paying member.
Ask a hundred subscribers why they pay and you'll hear the same three answers: habit, depth, and trust.
Habit means your site is part of their routine — they arrive without thinking. Depth means you cover their niche better than anyone free does. Trust means they believe the work is honest and worth funding.
Notice what's missing: guilt. Appeals to 'support journalism' convert poorly on their own. People pay for value they already feel, not value they're told about.
The practical lesson for anyone building a paid product: let readers experience the value first. That's why metered and freemium paywalls beat hard walls for most publications.
